I have created this thread "Games", so we can maybe raise some good discussions on games, its story lines and political contents.
I must say that 3 years ago I was really playing games a lot, but when I found out marxism, it stopped drastically, now I play only, from time to time, on some lan parties which occur in our neighbourhood every 3-6 months. Now I havenīt been playing for more than 5 months, maybe I will go on a Lan party for three days after we finish with school in June...we will see
So, has anyone played any good game which had some good political background or something like that? Maybe we could also discuss problem of implementing free market economy in a game (I canīt remember any other game besides Imperium Galactica, which had some kind of free market simulation). Basically all city/state building games are based on planned economy, no matter if you go for "capitalism" or "socialism" (anyone played Tropico?), its actually planned economy.
comradely,

This is my reply to comrade Vespucci about Command&Conquer.... Originally posted by Vespucci Yuri was a ridiculous character! Tiberian Sun was a bit outlandish but the series really got silly with Red Alert 2 - mind controlled squid? Dolphins sinking submarines? Dinosaurs?! :p Well, I didnīt like Tiberian sun really, but then RA2 sucked big time. For me both Tiberian sun and RA2 sucked the same. In TS, NOD was way better than GDI (as far as multiplayer is concerned), the sides werent really well balanced. But, you have to admit that Jurij looks like Lenin, no? :D I do remember the end of Red Alert... I was quite glad when they killed Stalin... but the trouble was that they presumed that the Soviets had to win, when in Red Alert 2 they pretended that the Allies won. So their attempts to make the two series cross over don't work properly. It is confusing in any way. If USSR wins in Red Alert, then C&C (the first one) is the continuation. If allies win, then RA2 continues the story. I donīt know where to put Tiberian sun in the story....as much as I know thoī, it is happening after the first C&C. So, again, it only happens if USSR wins... Hehe, yes, Stalin dies in both scenarios. If allies win, then some greek officer (or some soldier...) kills him with throwing a stone on his head. If USSR wins, Nadja kills him with poisoned tea, Kane taking USSR over then. Nod doesn't stand for anything, by the way, but it's probably related to the Book of Nod - there's enough mysticism to relate it to that (the fact that it's called the "Brotherhood", like they're a cult, and the idea of Kane being a messiah for the new age.) Interesting, Iīve never heard of the book - the Book of NOD - thoī. Maybe you have some info about it? It might just be interesting... Command&Conquer was actually my first game on PC. I was playing similar strategic games like that till I turned 16 when I started to study marxism. Before I discovered marxism, I was a real game maniac actually. We had our Warcraft II clan with friends and were in the top of the European ladder. But C&C has always been to me some kind of the best of the clasics of strategy. C&C is also the only original CD I have. I found the original copy yesterday and made a backup copy. :D But then I was disappointed when I figured out that I canīt install the game on win2k. It can be played on win2k, but you have to install it in win98 and then enter registry setings... Maybe once, when I install windows 98 on one of my disks, we can bring old memories to life and play some multiplayer C&C game on the net. If you were for that, of course :D BTW, one thing that is really irritating in multiplayer C&C (the first part) are engineers, because one engineeer takes over one building, in RA the building must at least be in critical condition in order to be taken over by only one engineer...the next weak point of C&C are small maps with not alot of tiberium, the first part of RA is better in these regards. In any case, I consider the best strategy game to be Sudden Strike. Has anyone played it? comradely, Luka

Half-Life is an excellent game.
Anyone ever played Silent Hill 3? That game is just about the best indictment of religious intolerance I've ever seen.

teis said: When I play games it's normally to get out aggresions. So I prefer games like Halflife, Mafia, Wolfenstein 3d etc This is so true. Actually, a lot of some American (and others around the world) "psichologist" and "theorists" interpret the whole aggression in games wrongly. They say: If a kid plays games which include aggression, it will stimulate him to do it in real life. This is so wrong. If one has the need to feel some adrenaline, it is way better that he plays (for example) The Need For Speed and doesnīt try to feel it in real life on some road putting in danger other people. Or, for example, one kid who had a "shooting-spree" on some American school, had Quake 2 installed on his computer and then everybody was blaming the authors of Quake 2 for the massacre. If one can actually perform a massacre in some game, where it seems to him as it would be happening in a real life, there will be less possibility for him to actually do it in real life. Of one nevertheless does it, the couses lays deeper, certainly not in a game. I guess there is only one computer magazine I know of that understands this. What do you think of that? comradely, Luka

Building games and planned economy
I have already mentioned it, but here is some more analysis on the subject.
In every building game (Sim city/Tropico and the like style) you command economy from top, you order what is to be build, set workersī salaries etc....There is no game where you would actually command an economy based on capitalism and free market. It is obvious that someone playing wouldnīt have a lot to do in a game simulation of free market (except to fall asleep), since market would "work itself" out to certain degree, you would then only have to intervene on some occasions. This on the other hand also shows how little has nowadays government to do with actual economical problems, all main things politicians in government have to consider is how to save the capitalism. But obviously people play games in order to do something which entertains them, to be involved in some action, while politicians sit there to get a nasty salary.
All such games are some petty-caricature of Stalinism, since its obvious that in thorough workersī democracy a player wouldnīt have a lot to command.....

I finished Wolfenstein 3D about a month ago. Not bad, but I hate the silly creatures. I like it realistic, so I prefer Soldier of Fortune II, Max Payne 2 and race games like Colin McRae. Recently, I installed the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo on my Linux box, but I'm afraid it's not my type of game: stupid monsters everywhere :) Yes Igor, the good old DOS games were cool, but I also feel some nostalgia for Red Alert 1 (Windows 95). This game was so great in its day, and even today I like it better than RA2! Now we'll have to wait for Half Life 2 (it's had so much delay:(), let's hope the system requirements are not too exaggerated...

Anyone play adventure games? I've played the LucasArts games, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle etc. and particularly Grim Fandango. GF is really excellent, like a good book. However those eternal enemies of culture, the industry bigwigs have decided that adventure games don't make enough money.
Bigwigs must die

I used to be a hardcore gamer until I got into Marxism. My PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube collect a lot of dust nowadays. Now, I rarely ever play video games. Also, video games are overpriced in my opinion (US$50 for a new copy of a game for Xbox, Gamecube, or PS2). I don't think that I will buy......ahem..........get games on an extensive basis until I can get my hands on some piracy equipment and a PC at home. Although I am a bit scared about the piracy equipment; I am afraid that I may end up wrecking my Xbox while taking it apart and installing the MOD chip (which would void my extended Best Buy warranty on it). I am also afraid of getting caught. Well, then again, as long as I do not distribute or sell pirated copies, I probably won't get caught anyway, but I am always a bit paraniod.
Do any of you know how to get piracy equipment in the USA, and the most stealthy way of doing it?

I'd sure love to have some nosy Fed corner you on this one :p "Oh no, obviously Marxism inspires our youth to crime! Whine, whine!" Games here are even more expensive, actually. I've seen new games for Ģ45 which is a lot more than $50, though usually I buy second-hand games which have been out for years anyway so pay virtually nothing. The second-hand games I've bought have a better record than the new ones...

The only original game I have bought in my life was Command & Conquer....others were all piratos.
Here original games cost about 45$ and not a lot of people are prepared to give so much money for a game they then play 24 hours. Here great majority is downloading *iso files from internet...

If I could only think of a way to get a pirated game without downloading it. Perhaps getting MOD chips for my PS2 and Xbox and renting games and downloading the games directly from the original disc would work, but how would I go about doing that? As long as we are talking about Command and Conquer, I must note that I got my username from Soldier Volkov from the expansion (Counterstrike...I think) of Command and Conquer: Red Alert, not from Trotsky's grandson (I didn't even know that he had a grandson, particularly with the surename of Volkov).

Well... economic motives... That pisses me off. Governments and companies make 'economic decisions' all the time, i.e. do whatever they like to make money at the expense of everything and everyone else, but as soon as the proles start following their example by downloading mp3s, copying games and so on to get around excessive prices it's suddenly 'crime' and 'delinquency'. I shouldn't be surprised I suppose... anyway, Volkov, say that if you get caught! Defend yourself in court and attack the prosecution, it brings fame and respect... as shown by Hitler :p I must note that I got my username from Soldier Volkov from the expansion Ah, I thought so. Him and Chitzkoi made an unbeatable team!
