In Chapter 5 'The Soviet Thermidor', under 'the degenration of the Bolshevik party' - Trotsky writes:

"The Widow of Lenin, Krupskaya, is also in disfavour, having proved unable despite all her efforts to adjust herself completely to the Thermidor."

This is when he is saying what happenend to Zionviev, Tomsky etc.

Now, I had always thought that Krupskaya was for the Left Oppostion, although I admit I do not know alot about her. Is Trotsky saying here that she tried to gain favour with Stalin?

Well as far as I know she was with the left opposition. But had to abandon politics if she shouldn't be killed like so many others.

Stalin snarled to her, that he could easily find another 'Lenin's Widow' if she didn't keep her mouth shut. She huddled out a miserable existence under Stalinist censorship and died in 1939. We can see in "Reminiscences of Lenin" (1933) how she accommodated herself to the Party Line:

'Voting on the question of whether to accept the German terms or not gave the following result: seven in favour and four against, with four abstentions including Trotsky, who shrank from taking upon himself responsibility on such a momentous issue at such an important time. The leading five who voted for concluding peace even on the Germans' terms (Lenin, Sverdlov, Stalin...'

It is about the discussions preceding Brest-Litovsk. Clearly she slanders Trotsky and glorifies Stalin. At this time her back was already broken by the Stalin machine.

Thanks so much everyone.

Another unfortunate 'back breaking'.
