New York City is fairly safe but very expensive. Most of upstate NY (rural) is very safe and fairly inexpensive. The problem is that both of these states are so big that differing parts of the state may be like living in another world. Northern NY is very rural (think 6 millions acres of forest state park). Central NY tends more towards farms. Most of the population of NY lives in NY City, Buffalo and a very narrow strip the follow the errie canal from one to the other. NY has colleges in every region of the state. The state college system includes 64 campus and the NY City system includes 23 more. That is not even including what started at NY land grant college, Cornell University. NY inlcudes NYU, Columbia University, Syracuse University, Rensselaer, etc. Most of it is very safe with many people in the rural areas never locking their doors.
