Revolutionary Music
« on: December 01, 2009, 03:05:49 AM »

What does everyone on the forum think of revolutionary music based on the experiences of the oppressed? Most of the more recent (Within the last couple decades) stuff seems to be Hip Hop and Punk such as songs by Tupac, Immortal Technique, The Coup, Sun Rise Above, Dead Kennedys, Anti-Flag , Roaring Jack, Redskins, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Marxman, etc, but also including other groups such as Rage Against the Machine and Street Sweeper Social Club. We also must not forget classic revolutionary songs such as L'Internationale, Bella Ciao, The Red Flag, Di Schvue, Solidarity Forever, and Fischia il vento.

As do I, (It is Tupac Shakur btw) I believe one of the greatest songs by Tupac is "Me Against the World" especially at the end.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cjv7hEAytU

"With all this extra stressin
The question I wonder is after death, after my last breath
When will I finaly get to rest? Through this oppression
they punish the people that's askin questions
And those that possess, steal from the ones without possesions
The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons
Don't settle for less - even the genius asks questions
Be grateful for blessings
Don't ever change, keep your essence
The power is in the people and politics we address
Always do your best, don't let the pressure make you panic
And when you get stranded
And things don't go the way you planned it
Dreamin of riches, in a position of makin a difference
Politicians and hypocrites, they don't wanna listen
If I'm insane, it's the fame made a brother change
It wasn't nothing like the game
It's just me against the world"

I'm fairly certain 2Pac also has a song about murdering your babies.

I have a completely different musical taste, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying music of all types and what I like still lends itself in a major way to being labeled as revolutionary.

Check out Nine Inch Nails' album titled Year Zero. There is also a remix album which rocks.

He often talks about how capitalist drug dealing and oppressive society are killing babies if that is what you mean, I have never in all my years heard Tupac say anything about killing children, most of the time it is about how he wishes he could help poor Women and Children left behind by their boyfriends/Husbands/Fathers.

The song I was thinking of Hit Em Up.

"Fuck you, die slow motherfucker, my fo-fo make sure all y'all kids don't grow!"

[edit:] Then again that was just a "diss" song.

That song I think in the end was a mistake for Tupac, but I think I myself would probably end up pretty angry after being shot 9 times.. Was that part of the song even him? I thought that was another person on the songs line.

I've been really getting into Bruce Springsteen lately "Born in the USA" is probably one of my favorite songs. "Born to Run" and "the River" is good too. Woody Guthrie "This Land is Your Land", "1913 Massacre" and "Two Good Men" are really good. Bob Dylan "A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall", "Times They Are A Changin", and "Blowin in the Wind". Suprised no one said anything about Joe Hill, one of the best socialist songwriters. Connolly's "the Red Flag", Bad Religion, the Refused, and Pete Seeger just to name a few :)

Oh hell no, not Reagan Youth. They had two mediocre songs. There is so much better punk.

If you want revolutionary, check out "Bandiera Rossa." You can find the original folk version as well as the punk. The Slovenian band Panktri does a good cover. And a personal favorite of mine the red skin band Angelic Upstarts does a fantastic job as well.

I agree. I love their version the most, but the Croatian band Kud Idijoti does another good cover of both Bandiera Rossa and Bella Ciao.

I also love old rock'n'roll, the Beatles and stuff.
