this is a work of fiction, yes. but the realism and the devaststing consequences that ensued to Winston in the book rings true and every socialist or marxist or whatever will realize that there will be general unrest in a society such as that. BEST BOOK OF ALL TIME!!!!!!

Best book of all time?
1984 is good but what about "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" by Robert Tressel? Surely that's the best book of all time.

Great unrest there will be in such a society. It is a shame that many associate the faulty leadership of Stalin with communism and socialism.

BEST BOOK OF ALL TIME!!!!!! Good book. :) Anyway, I see it more as a representation of a Stalinist society. Orwell was an anti-Stalinist and he displayed this in the book 'Animal Farm". If we look back at Stalinist Russia and "1984" you'll notice that there's quite a few similarities. There's the personality cult. Big brother's image was everywhere as was Stalin's. There's the very controlling inner party and Stalin's party was in control rather than the proletariat. There's even a good representation of Trotsky in "1984" in the form of Goldstein. He criticized the party and everything by him was destroyed as if it was censored. He was also considered the top enemy.
