Bah; the Casualties aren't so bad. Decent lyrics and politics, and I think they can dress and act however they want. I mean hey, at least they're punks. Oh, and at a recent MDC show the lead singer fell off the stage and landed on me, and later put my friend in a headlock mid-song:D. Great band!

Do socialists generally choose what music they like according to their principles and ideology? I don't. I guess it doesn't really matter what there politics are as long as i enjoy the music. For example, many of the blues guitarists from the 30s and 40s were sexist and mysoginistic but, in my opinion, made great influential music. On the other hand, while their politics may be pretty radical, i don't like/listen to bands like radiohead, coldplay, bob dylan etc no matter how much i agree with their politics. I guess what i'm trying to say is that when i listen to a piece of music, i don't really do so with my politics in mind, more on a like/dislike basis. What do others think?

Coldplay and Radiohead have radical politics? News to me. I know that Radiohead were anti-war, but never heard anything else about their beliefs... I choose music based on what sounds good to me. That means that I will probably gravitate towards things with socialist and/or libertarian themes because I can identify with the lyrics easily, but it doesn't mean that everything that I listen to is political- if I like a piece of music- for the lyrics or otherwise- I'll listen to it.

I think I agree with that. The difference, though, is that much of punk is overtly political and if I'm going to be listening to political music I might as well agree with the artists' views. But yeah, in other genres it doesn't matter nearly as much.

Coldplay are involved in the make trade fair campaign and RadioHead campaign always say they are anti-capitalists. They said that their Kid A album was inspired by Naomi Klien. Basically, middle class, student hand wringing if you ask me. You never here about them going on about the poverty here at home in Britain.

Like GD I also lean towards music that sounds good to me. Ok I admit, I am a Radiohead fan( not so much Coldplay though). I like them because they sound good and I feel they have helped progress music in the same way as the Beatles, Stones ,Bowie, Pistols, Clash, Joy Division, Smiths, Stone Roses, Nirvana did.I think the majority of bands are based on their influences ie other bands, and dont develop music in any way. By this I mean they sound uncannily like their influences (Oasis like the Beatles with a bit of Bowie thrown in, for example) or they perform or play using the same tried and tested formulas that most rock bands have used over the years. I used to find the band Sonic Youth interesting because of the original way the used their instruments, playing guitars with screwdrivers and such like. During the early 80s there were a number of bands who used industial tools to originate there sound, the German band Einzurstandente Neubaten spring to mind here. Going quikly back to Radiohead for a minute , I thought Kid A was an interesting release. It wasnt universally accepted as typical Radiohead fare and was slagged down in the press but sold bucketloads; an example of a band not giving the fans what they want but willing to experiment with a different direction. I would far prefer that than a punk band that are overtly political but sound the same over the course of 10 albums!! Ian (who used to be a progressive rock fan!!!!!! Genesis, Floyd, KIng Crimson etc etc ....aaarrrgh!!!!)

Anyone like Gypsy Jazz?
I was at a gypsy jazz festival last weekend dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the death of Django Reinhardt. It was GREAT!
Those gypsies sure know how to play guitar!
