If it wasnt for Nirvana half the bands that are around nowadays would not exist. Ok, if you think Cobain and his band were shit i'll give you a few years to form a band and sell millions and millions of records worldwide, only then are you fit to critiscise Nirvana.

No, record success means nothing about music, take for example Eminem, his rapping is of poor quality and cannot hold up other rappers such as Mr. Lif, etc.
Yet he sells more records than anything.
And the only way music becomes popular is if is on a heartless mega corperation's roster, a thing that I would never do.
And what bands have Nirvana inspired? Good Charolette, etc.
Terrible bands

Rival Schools and They might be giants are two, both in your list. Im sure there is more but I dont know half of them.
Your comparison between Eminem and Nirvana is essentially flawed because Nirvana's music was their own, Eminem writes his own lyrics but others write his music.
GD is right though, music is a matter of taste, and you seem to think you are correct on the basis of you liking and disliking something which is a very bad attitude to have.

There were plenty of other bands who played just as good, if not better music than them and never got the credit.

Yes that is correct, every band in a way has played its part, some more than others. Nirvana are one of the most influential of all time thats what im saying, thats not to take anything away from the bands you mention. And of course Nirvana were also influenced by other bands, every band is.

Nirvana wasn't year zero for rock music in the early 90s. There were plenty of other bands who played just as good, if not better music than them and never got the credit. ...and if it wasn't for new technology, rock music would never have been that influence etc. etc. Jedi: I dont understand what you think there is wrong with Nirvana. Ok, they became a popband because of some bad elements on Nevermind, but try to drop your prejudiced attitude to all music they have made - thats actual what you do. You like Mudhoney, i do to, but then i dont understand why you dont like bleach with Nirvana fx - some of the numbers on this album sounds like mudhoney and actually Cobain has played together with mudhoney.

Yes, I would hardly say Insesticide, Bleach and In Utero were pop albums, and the mainstream success of Nevermind was not intended - that is why the band released Insesticide in the first place.
Mark Arm himself says that Nirvana were one of the best bands of all time, so what is your case?

I don't care what Mark Arm is saying, that's his opinion and has no bearing on mine. I will say there were American hardcore and post-punk bands making very similar music to Nirvana years before (check out the Pixies, some of Black Flag's less punky material, even the Stooges), and that "If it wasnt for Nirvana half the bands that are around nowadays would not exist" is not the same as saying that Nirvana were good. I won't say that Nirvana are crap, although I'm thinking it very hard right now, after all it's only subjective.

No one mentions Dance music. In the late 80s acid house had a massive influence on youth.OK no political lyrics, but a sound and beat can also be revolutionary cant it?Alot of the comrades seem to have a bias towards the Punk /Heavy Metal end of youth culture but to the youth I talk to UK Garage an US Gangsta Rap is what matters. I have many music tastes developed over many years...at the moment my CD changer has Drum and Bass.. a truly underground dance music which will not and cannot be monopolised commercially. Also some DnB DJs have come out politically over certain issues. Lets keep our minds open comrades....Ian

Hey
I think early 90s dance music is ok. I like Acid House, stuff like 808 State, MArshall Jefferson and A Guy Called Gerald. I like indie dance stuff as well, like the mondays and the roses. I don't think theres any good dance music anymore. Its become too commercialised. You listen to the charts these days and its all radio friendly pop. I think whats happeniing with the new rock bands at the moment is more exceiting. Acid House and the whole movement was quite politically influential on the kids in the early 90s. A lot of the people going on illegal raves played roles in the anti-poll tax demos and protesting against the criminal justice act in 94.

Dont look to the charts for the good stuff!! Its happening in the clubs 4 or 5 times a week. In its own way acid house had as much effect as punk did in the late 70s.Im glad you mentioned the Stone Roses ....I think they are more important than Nirvana.Especially in their influence to other bands. Jedi earlier mentions Wire ...I recommend comrades check them out . A very influential band from the late 70s( REM, BLUR,etc) But the point I would like to make is that the sound of a band or artist/DJ is just as important as lyrics. You can have a revolutionary sound you know! Mr bojangles what part of hampshire you from? Ian
