What was the socio-economic system in the East Roman empire? After slavery had exhausted itself in its western twin and made way to the feudalism of the barbarians, how could Byzantium cope? Did Constantinople, sort of, 'reform into serfdom'?

i haven't studied the question in detail but I guess that it was probably a mix between slavery and Asiatic Mode of Production

- craft
- trade
- agriculture
- education

Constantinople was the main source of eastern goods (eg. silk, spice) until its fall in the 15th centuary.
