Has anyone read any of Stephen Jay Gould's works? There was a postiive tribute to him in an appendix to the US edition to volume I of Reason in Revolt. I am interested in what he has put forth.
I have his massive work (the book is huge, and it exceeds 1000 pages!), The Structure of Evolutionary Theory, but I have not had any time to read it.

I read alittle something about him in one liberal class I had in high school. I wish I had paid more attention at the time. But he basically critiqued the scientific norms of the time which was trying to scientifically justify rascism.
This was the experiment. Two skulls. One from a black and white man. Both skulls were filled with beads. The white skull held more beads than the black. Therefore white people were more intelligent than black man. And thus it was proclaimed throughout the land.
And Stephen Jay Gould said thats bullshit. Thats all I know of the man. But from going through IDOM he apparantly used dialectics in his research. Sounds interesting enough.

Yes, it is interesting to know that he had also challenged the "theory" of biological determinism and such. I just wish I had more time so I could read that massive work.

I have never read any of his works, but I have seen him in various T.V. shows and specials that deal with evolution. Just watched him on PBS's series on evolution, dude dropped mad science. I've also hear of him everytime I listen to MC Hawking, check him out.

Actually, that’s true. African American skulls are smaller in size than those of Caucasians. However, I need not note the insignificance of that, as brain size isn’t really an important factor in intelligence.

His book Ever Since Darwin, which Ted and Alan worked from pretty heavily for RiR, is written in a very popular style, is only about 250-300 pages and is just a collection of essays, which means you can read any chapter in any order based on your interests. H really avoids the use of technical jargon and academic BS wherever possible, which I very much appreciate. Definitely worth a read comrades.
