I have noticed that there are many people from non-English speaking nation on these forums. I am curious to how their language prgrammes in schools work out.
Over here in the USA, the language programmes are horrible. I took three years of German in high school, did very well in the class, and after all of that, I barely know German. :(

English classes are quite good in Denmark and most people here are rather good at English. I think it is a public acceptance of the fact that our language is only spoken by some 5-6 million people in the world, and therefore we have to sepak English with foreigners... The challenge however is to lewar Spanish...something I am working on

I agree with Volkov that our programs are terrible here. My school boasts 1600+ students, but only offers 3 languages: Spanish, French and German. We have block scheduling, so often students will have too much time between their language classes to remember things adequately. Also, only 5 credits (semesters) of each language are offered, and they do nothing to teach languages to kids younger than 9th grade (age 14).

My school has more students. But it offers only Spanish and very few french classes so most students take Spanish. Ive had more 2 years of the Spanish 1 and only know how to say where is the bathroom because my mom taught me that. Way to go los angeles schooling!

Language programmes in Russia are awfull too. I had 9 years of english at school, but after it i could hardly read with a vocabulary. I learnt it myself, reading english books after school. I think, russians have nearly the same situation, as the americans, we don't need to learn the languges, because almost everywhere we travel, poeple understand russian and we have a very big country and can travel inside it. Also i learnt french and spanish, but needless to say, i can't speak it.

Just to add to what Andreas said, in Denmark it's common (though not fulfilled everywhere) for schools to teach both Italian, French, Latin, German, Spanish and Russian. Aside from that, we have a few lessons of learning how to read (not speak) Norwegian and Swedish, in our Danish classes.

English is a compulsory subject in high schools and colleges. If one failed in the College English Test (Band-4), he or she could not get the diploma for bachelor. I was so lucky that I not only passed band-4 but also band-6. In both the exams I even didn't finish my paper and just filled the last 10 blanks with "C,C,C,C...":p
My college offers German and Japanese for those who have passed band-4, and I took them simultaneously, and passed the final exams. However, it's still very far from speaking them.

Here in slovenia we have to learn generally 3 langs in high school (if you wish you can 5, but not a lot of students do that)...also most people here just pick up most of the Serbo-Croatian just growing up here.....
things are not as good as they sound tho....one of my friends wanted to learn Russian, but he was denied the option because he hasnt learned Russian in High School already.....

Katherine The high school I went to is quite similar to that. I guess that it either takes college courses or lots of self-teaching to actually master a language in larger areas in which multiple languages are not really needed.

Yeah, my cousins in Slovenia are fluent in 5 languages (Slovene, French, English, Italian, Serbo-Croatian). To an American, that's amazing. When I was cruising around western Slovenia this summer, everyone spoke Italian as a second language. In Piran and Koper they spoke every language I could think of.

I am Spanish-speaking and most of non-Spanish-speaking people who have learned my Language are convinced that Spanish is the most complex, rich and hard Language to learn beside Chinese or Japanese... I know for me English was quite easy to study... after Primary School! But in High School, I always got high marks. :) Nowadays, I am the one in this little city helping other English students...
