March 15 Demos
« on: March 07, 2003, 04:16:04 PM »

Hey everyone!  The past two months have seen a phenomenal rise in the anti-war movement.  January 18, February 15, and March 5 were all great successes.  The next big event is in Washington DC on March 15 (and solidarity demos will be held in other cities as well).

We need to mobilize the youth and working class against the war - we must explain the class perspective and interests involved, and build the forces of Marxism here in the heart of imperialism!

No to the war on working people at home and abroad!
No war but the class war!

JP's right. Every demonstration so far has proved to be larger than the last, culminating in the February 15th protests which spanned the entire world. Anti war protestors have made their message loud and clear - should the imperialists wage war on Iraq, there will be a great deal of opposition.

Whose planning on going to DC on the 15th? I'll be there. It should be a good time, hopefully not too cold like the last few months' protests were.

Question to my American comrades: do you think the turn-out of the March 15 demonstrations in Washington DC will be bigger than last month? I'm just wondering because I expect the turn-out for Brussels (Belgium, that country of 'Old' Europe whose leaders are not peaceful at all and apply scandalous repression to peace activists) to be lower than on February 15, mainly due to a lack of mobilisation compared to last month.

Cheers,

It's hard to say...

I think that the logic of history would say that it is likely that the turnout will be lower than last time.  The reason I say this is because I think that last month's demos represented a generalized awakening of layers which had never demonstrated before.  Very broad layers were involved.  Many of them may not feel the need to keep on the move at this stage (this will change of course).

Also, as our Belgian comrade said, organization for this demo has not been as massive world-wide as the last one.  However, the immediacy of the war may mobilize a lot of people (it is possible though not the most probable situation that the war will be on by then).  The anti-war demos, just like the class struggle generally, will not develop in a straight line, with each one necessarily being larger than the last.  It too will ebb and flow, but most importantly, over time, class consciousness will rise with each passing week the war and general crisis of capitalism continues.

It is vital that we make our presence known on all of these demos, but our most important task remains the building of an experienced and theoretically educated Marxist alternative.  Through our interventions in these demos we will gain this experience, meet new people, and build the forces of Marxism in the US and internationally.
